Not So Hollow Farm Trees

NOT SO HOLLOW FARM

A nursery specializing in the growing of container grown trees and shrubs native to Ontario, Canada. The production began in 2002. It was started—and is still owned and operated—by Ian Payne and Viki Reynolds on 43 acres in Dufferin County, Ontario, in the Purple Hills of Mulmur. As a Landscape Architect, Ian realized the need for locally sourced and grown Native plants and so it grows…

If you would like to try a 'specimen' tree, we can place an order by the end of November from this farm and have the trees up here for the same pick-up time in the spring as the smaller trees. Check out their website. They have quite a few nut and fruit trees and bushes. (Order must be placed through MLCA if you want us to pick them up for you.)

Trees from Not So Hollow Farm

We found this farm just west of Barrie where they grow native trees from seed harvested in that area. Some of their trees are good to Zone 3, most zone 4. We are theoretically between zone 4b and 5a but the freezing and thawing is so erratic that some trees even for zone 4 have a hard time surviving here. We are trying out some of their trees that have failed here other years but were from the Niagara Peninsula (Black Walnut). Theoretically, when the seeds are from Barrie area, they should have a better chance of survival. We will see!
And then there is the Tulip Tree that I just couldn't resist. Steve says he has never seen one north of Hwy 7.  Hope this will be the first.

Planting the 6 tamaracks in memory of Andy Muller. They are along a fence line where the ground is constantly wet. They were in 1 gallon pots and about 4 feet tall.

When we were trying to find a place to plant the black walnut trees, Steve said "Oh, look! A butternut tree. Perfect!" (The tree at the top of the picture with the telephone pole 'coming out of it').  Wave planted this tree, possibly the first year of the MLCA tree planting project, and hadn't realized it had survived! It now has 2 black walnut trees as neighbours.

The Red Oak, Bur Oak and Tulip Tree were in 2 gallon pots, all the rest in 1 gallon pots. The pricing of the trees from Not So Hollow Farm is according to the size of the pot and the species.
